QUORUM BALLET

Quorum Ballet is a dance company that presents contemporary repertoire founded by Daniel Cardoso, his artistic director and resident choreographer, which has created a repertoire dance company renowned in Portugal without any financial support in the first three years.

The company has performed trough out Portugal having a avarrage of 70 performances a year. Internationally, the Company has presented his work in Denmark (2006-07-09), USA / New York (2007-08), Poland (tour to three cities), Singapore, Macau, Xangai, Spain and Cyprus. The recognition of the Company has been consolidating itself also through the reviews published in various newspapers and magazines, highlighting the Dance Europe Magazine.

Till this date it has produced over 20 productions including choreographic works for children, co-production with other international companies and several guest choreographers. In 2009 Quorum Ballet has received the prize for best contemporary dance company on the first edition of Portugal Dance Awards. In the same year has started to be subsidized by the Ministry of Culture and the Direcção Geral das Artes. Since then the company has a very well defined and permanent staff, maintaining the excellence and professionalism in all activities.

The company is resident in Recreios da Amadora with the support of the town hall of Amadora. It shares this same space with the Quorum Academy (created by the QB), in partnership with the non-profit organization AQK Quorum Cultural Association. The academy offers dance classes open to children, youth and adults.

 

Daniel Cardoso graduated from the National Conservatory of Lisbon, also won full scholarships with the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance (where he received the CocaCola Award for Artistic Excellence) and the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. While in the United States, Denmark and Brazil danced with companies like Martha Graham Dance Ensemble, Martha Graham Dance Company (Soloist), Peter Schaufuss Ballet (Principal), National Ballet of Rio de Janeiro (guest rehearsal director) Donald Byrd/The Group (Soloist) and as a guest artist with Westchester Ballet Company, Pearl Lang Dance Theater, Battery Dance Company, Coyote Dancers, amongst others. During his international carrier he danced with several choreographers.

After returning to Portugal in the summer of 2005, Daniel founded the award wining company Quorum Ballet, where he is the artistic director and resident choreographer.

His experience as a chorographer includes over 17 works for the Quorum Ballet and works for Peter Schaufuss Ballet School (Denmark), Vaganova Academy (Russia) CeDeCe Dance Company, Companhia de Dança de Almada, National Conservatory of Lisbon, amongst others. His work has been highly acclaimed by the international press.

In 2007 received an invitation to teach and choreograph for the Vaganova Academy in Russia, the piece created, was premiered at the Marinsky Theater in June 2008.

Daniel’s teaching experience includes the Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Vaganova Dance Academy, Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, Peter Schaufuss Ballet and PSB School, CeDeCe Companhia de Dança Contemporanêa, to mention a few. Daniel Cardoso is currently a member of the General Council at the National Dance Conservatory of Lisbon.

 

Pedro Alves, dramaturgist, was born in Sintra in 1979. He is the co-founder and artistic director of Teatromosca, for which he has worked as actor, stage director and producer. As an actor, he has taken part in productions with texts by Erik Bogosian, Sophocles, Stig Dagerman, Federico García Lorca, Fernando Sousa, Jean Genet, Oscar Wilde, Filomena Oliveira, Alfred Musset and others with the Companhia de Teatro de Sintra, Dante – Companhia de Teatro de Madrid, Teatro TapaFuros, Teatromosca, Teatro Focus, as well as other theatre companies. He has worked with the choreographers Carla Sampaio, Daniel Cardoso and Célia Alturas. He has directed theatre productions of works by Eça Leal, Gil Vicente, John Berger, Jorge Palinhos and others. He wrote and directed “Kip” for Teatromosca, and since 2005 has conceived and put into action pedagogical animation projects for the Municipal Council of Sintra and in a number of museums. He has worked as a coach and stage director for the Theatre Group of the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the University of Lisbon.

 

Jorge Silva, composer, was born in Oporto in 1980. Graduated has a dancer at the dance and music School of Ginasiano having Norma and Filipe Silvestre has teachers. In1999, studies at the University for dance and music in Rotterdam, Codarts.

Frequented the curse coyer director and graduated in Dance. Has worked with choreographers like Itzik Galili, Nils Christie, Joseph T'mim, Guy Weizman, Roni Haver among others. In 2005 returned to Portugal since then he has worked as a musician playing for dance classes at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, National Ballet of Lisbon, Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo, Escola Superior de Dança and the Dance School of Ana Köhler.

Jorge as composed music for the Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Ruby Edelman, Inês Cerquerra, Daniel Cardoso ana Ana Köhler. Was musical assistant for the piece 'A Arte da Fuga' by Rui Lopes Graça. Currently he is a multi instrument musician and a freelancer musical producer.
