CASA DAS MUDAS ARTS CENTER

The “Casa das Mudas” Centre for the Arts, which is located in the Council of Calheta, at an approximate distance of 30 Kms from Funchal, was inaugurated in October 2004 in the aim fundamentally of raising public interest in the arts in general, and in modern art in particular.

This cultural facility is now comprised of two nuclei: the original manor house which became an art exhibition area, and a second entirely new and independent building.

The original building “Casa das Mudas” at present known as the “House of Culture of Calheta”, is an old manor house which dates back to the 15th century. This house, built at the top of a cliff overlooking the town of Calheta, once belonged to a granddaughter of João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of Madeira.

Built from scratch, the new building is very modern in architectural design, and fits perfectly into the surrounding natural environment of the area, while providing beautiful views from its interior over the sea and the surrounding slopes.

In the new complex there are two thousand square metres of floor area for exhibitions, an auditorium seating 200 spectators, a library, shop area and a panoramic restaurant, art workshops and art studios.

The Centre for the Arts has become a cultural space for the achievement of personal growth, and its intention is to promote learning and education through art.
